The Lumia 800 is crafted out of a
single piece of polycarbonate
and as a result is as light as a
feather.
At the bottom of the Nokia Lumia
800, there's a speaker. We didn't
hear the sound quality of the
Nokia Lumia 800, and with the
speaker's size, we don't expect it
to pack the loudest sound, but at
least the music can be heard
whether you have the facing
screen up or down.
There's the usual earphone jack
at the top and a microUSB
connection for charging and
connecting to your computer.
he screen is a ClearBlack display
and it's slightly domed. This
makes it feel as though the
Windows Phone interface is
jumping out at you and feels all
the better for it. However, it does
attract fingerprints, as does the
Lumia 800's whole finish.
Around the back and you'll find
an 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss camera.
Apparently, it lets more light in
than other cameras. We didn't
really see this (and we're not
sure if it will be particularly
handy), but the camera quality is
top notch – as you'd expect from
Nokia.
The thing most people are
looking forward to with the
Nokia Lumia 800 though is the
Windows Phone operating
system.
Nokia has left this pretty much
alone, probably because
Microsoft is militant on this point,
but as big fans of the Windows
Phone interface and platform as
whole, this is no bad thing.
Nokia has brought in three new
innovations to the homescreen
though. There's the Nokia Drive
application, which allows you to
use your phone as a standalone
SatNav, in landscape mode.
Unfortunately, like most of the
data-dependant features on the
Nokia devices on show, we were
unable to test this properly. The
interface does look pretty good
though and easy to use.
Nokia's Music service is also
onboard, allowing you to keep
your music collection in check
and listen to Nokia's preinstalled
music lists while online or offline.
Again, this feature didn't work,
because there wasn't a data
connection, but demos in the
keynote looked smooth enough.
The third feature Nokia debuted
on the Nokia Lumia 800 is the
ESPN Sports Hub, which allows
you to get all the news and
scores as they happen. The
interface is standard Windows
Phone fare, but the amount of
information embedded is pretty
impressive.
The Nokia Lumia 800 runs on a
1.4GHz single core processor,
and it certainly proves that you
don't need a dual core processor
to make things move fast. We
didn't experience any problem
with running speed while testing
the phone briefly and this is
refreshing from a company that
seems to build in stutters.
After spending a little while
playing with the Nokia Lumia
800, we were very impressed
with what we saw and we look
forward to seeing more when
we get to spend a little more
time hands on.
