Nokia
may have called 'timeout' for the Meego OS. Nokia N9, the last ( and
first ) Meego running recently recieved its update 1.3. Probably the
last update. Having announced that the Meego OS has fallen out of
favour, and will not be recieving anymore love from Nokia. And the key
members of the Meego team have left in search of better jobs.
But
now it is in news that Meego is coming back, for good. Ex-employees of
Nokia, the Meego team members, are now the part of a new company
Jolla. Jolla is, like Nokia, a Finland based company with some amount of
foriegn investment. This company now employs some of the best minds in
the industry and is looking for Meego developers and supporters to
join them in Finland.

Jolla was actually born in april 2011.
Since its start, it has been working on a smart phone ( or many. not
clear). That is what its CEO Jussi Hurmola, claims. Eventhough details
are not avialable, the next Meego device is scheduled later this year,
with my bets on 4th quarter.

The CEO claimed Jolla would not run
into patent problems with larger companies, probably referring to
Nokia. The Jolla device will not be using the Harmattan Swipe gesture
UI seen on the Nokia N9. Instead a new User Interface is in the works.
The Harmattan UI is the private property of Nokia, unlike the Meego OS
itself which is Open Source.
(all this action, and storytelling
is taking place on Twitter, and LinkedIn. So you can follow Jolla,
Meego, Jussi Hurmola for getting latest updates..)
On being
asked why the company did not go with Android OS, the CEO gave an
answer similiar to Nokia's. They wanted to have an identity. Not to be
lost in the crowd of google followers out there.. The question is, will
Jolla make a mark on the industry? Meego was a revolutionary product,
when clubbed with N9 hardware and Harmatten UI. Can Jolla bring it
back.

Finally, on being asked wheter Nokia N9 will be
supported by Jolla, the answer, as expected turned out to be a no.
Ofcourse the modding community will port the new edition to older
devices, no doubt, given the large community(compared to installed user
base) support Meego and Maemo recieved..
